Drinking by Poolside

I won’t come back, sitting by poolside ill at ease,

Till crystal palaces turn dim and low in twilight.

Peach blossoms fall with willow-down blown by the breeze,

When yellow birds spread wings with white birds in their flight.

Seeking no favor, I drink my wine all the day;

I’m not assiduous in the court where I feel cold.

Longing in office for my hermitage far away,

Why do I not resign before I grow too old?

A poem written by Du Fu, a poet of the Tang Dynasty, in the spring of the first year of the Qian Yuan era (758), this poem was written during Du Fu’s last stay in Chang’an. The first two lines of the poem are about the immediate scene of Qujiang River, followed by a description of what he saw while sitting, then a description of his feelings over wine, and finally a reflection of the poet’s bitterness and pain of having no way to serve his country. The whole poem is euphemistic and the scenes are blended.
