Listen to this article

Bachelor Degree is the most popular degree programs where international students are admitted every year. After finishing high school in their native country, students are eager to study bachelor in their ideal university, and for those from many countries, China is a suitable destination for them. While studying in another country can always feel unfamiliar and strange, in most Chinese universities, students carry out the same schedules and procedures for courses and graduation. This article will introduce how do international students graduate from Chinese universities.

Students need to complete all courses required by their study program. This includes general education courses, specialized courses for the major, internships, thesis/dissertation, etc. The course requirements are specified in the curriculum for each program. Specialized courses can be different according to the major you choose, yet the general education courses are basicly the same for students from all the majors. The completion of the all courses during the university’s study career is the basic step for graduation.

What students care about most during university study period is the credit system. Students need to earn a minimum number of credits for their program to graduate. Most bachelor’s degrees require 130-140 credits over 4 years. Master’s degrees typically require 30-50 credits over 2-3 years. The credit requirements depend on the university and program. During grade 2 or 3, students might need to choose the study courses themselves for that study year, and it will be most important to calculate the total credits carefully as different courses’ credits are differed as well. To make sure that all the courses choosen are finished and the total credits meet the graduate standard is a critical step for graduation.

To graduate, students also need to meet at least the minimum graduation GPA standard. Students need to maintain a satisfactory level of academic performance to graduate. The minimum undergraduate GPA for graduation is usually 2.0-2.5 out of 4.0, while for postgraduate studies it is typically 3.0. Poor academic results can lead to warnings, probation or dismissal from the program. In short, to meet the minimum graduation GPA standard, students at least should have no subject failed during all the academic years in university.

For university students, they need to write and defense an academic dissertation or thesis to the standards of their university and committee. The thesis must demonstrate research ability, critical thinking, and contribute new findings. Students can only graduate after their thesis defense has been passed. The thesis defense is a procedure to evaluate students’ gains and ideas during the writing of the thesis and the facticity of the thesis, and usually if students failed the first thesis defense, there will be a second chance. Thus students should really take the thesis writing really seriously.

Clearing all fees and debts in time is also important. Students are required to pay all outstanding tuition fees, library fees, accommodation fees, etc before graduation. Failure to clear debts to the university can result in not receiving the diploma and graduation documents. Considering the economic situation of the students, the university may not require students to pay everything on time, but before graduation, all the fees should be paid according to the university’s requirements.

Above are the important steps for international students to successfully graduation from Chinese universities. International students need to fulfill multiple requirements to graduate successfully from Chinese universities. Satisfactorily completing their curriculum, maintaining good academic standing, defending a thesis, and clearing all obligations to the university are essential to earning a degree, in accordance with the standards and policies of their specific programs. With substantial efforts, international students can achieve their goals of graduating from universities in China.
