In Imitation of the Weary Way (IV)

Bao Zhao

When water’s spilled o’er level ground,

It will run eastward, westward, southbound and northbound.

A man’s life’s also ruled by fate.

Why must we sigh outdoors or in, early or late?

Drink wine to drown grief if you may,

And raise your cup and stop to sing the Weary Way!

How can our heart be like unfeeling wood or stone?

I hush my voice and hesitate lest it be known.
