中庭[1]杂树多，
偏为梅咨嗟[2]。
“问君何独然[3]？”
“念其[4]霜中能作花，
露中能作实，
摇荡春风媚春日，
念尔[5]零落逐寒风，
徒有[6]霜华无霜质[7]！”

[2] 咨嗟：赞叹。
[3] 何独然：何以独独如此。
[4] 其：这里指梅花。
[5] 尔：这里指杂树。
[6] 徒有：空有。
[7] 霜华：霜一般的光和色，指杂树的外表。霜质：耐寒的品质。

Bao Zhao
In midcourt stand manifold trees;
To mume my admiration goes.
Why should you favor it so, please?
Against the cold alone it blows.
It can bear fruit in spite of frost
And dance in wind to greet spring day,
While other blooms in blasts are lost
When from the branches they’re torn away.
