Song of Northern Frontier

Bao Zhao

Winged messages came from north frontiers,

Beacon fires seen in capital.

Garrison towns sent cavaliers

To save the north from its downfall.

Late autumn hardened shafts and bows;

The foe’s strong in battle array.

Sword in hand, angry the king rose,

Courriers dispatched from day to day.

Men followed the track serpentine;

In single file high bridges they crossed.

Drumbeats and flutes for home would pine;

Armor and flags were clad in frost.

The swift wind swept o’er border plain;

Sand and grit floated high and low.

Stif as hedgehog spine the horse’s mane,

No man could draw the horn-trimmed bow.

In hard times we see men steadfast;

In chaos we know heroes great.

For good rulers lives may be cast

And sacrificed to their dear State.
