Wu Wenying –

Night Flower
Wu Wenying
The bridge o’ershadowed by a willow tree,
Orioles warbling over sunny bowers,
Our ride was often sweetened by spring flowers.
When our boat in delight
Was moored at night,
My tender love went deep into the land with me.
We wrote verse line,
Long we drank wine,
And trimmed lamp wick:
Time passed so quick.
Can I forget our land or river trip
By rowing boat or flipping whip?
Like dreary dreams ten years have passed.
The swallows have flown over the Lake of the West,
Leaving in ancient palace but an empty nest.
I feel so sad and drear
When again I come here.
I call for silver cups of wine as before;
Over the brook the rain comes fast
And falling petals run riot on the shore,
E’en the lingering crows fly across the sky vast.
In the bower where lived my dear, alas!
Who’d grieve at sunset over fragrant grass!

The lyrics of “Night Flower” are written by Wu Wenying, a lyricist of the Song Dynasty. The first piece is about the joy of reunion, while the second piece is about the sadness after the departure of the concubine. The language is lush and clear, and the mood is rendered by the scenery, and the remaining feelings are infinite.
