Fighting South of the Town

Anonymous

Fighting south of the town, Men were killed up and down.

On those unburied in the wilds crows might be fed,

But I would tell the crows to cry first for the dead:

“Unburied, they’re exposed to view.

How can their carrion escape you?”

Clear, clear streams sigh;

Dark, dark reeds sway.

Brave horsemen die; Wounded steeds neigh.

How to build on the plain Bridge and house north and south?

When we can reap nor corn nor grain,

With what to feed the monarch’s mouth?

O how can we be then Subjects loyal to his majesty?

Think of those loyal men

Who are worthy of our memory!

They went out in the morn to fight,

But never to come back at night!
