君知妾有夫，
赠妾双明珠。
感君缠绵[1]意，
系在红罗襦[2]。
妾家高楼连苑起，
良人[3]执戟明光[4]里。
知君用心如日月，
事[5]夫誓拟[6]同生死。
还君明珠双泪垂，
恨不相逢未嫁时。

[1]缠绵：情意深。
[2]襦：短衣、短袄。
[3]良人：女子对丈夫的称呼。
[4]明光：皇帝的宫殿。
[5]事：侍奉。
[6]拟：打算，想要。
Reply of a Chaste Wife
Zhang Ji
You know I love my husband best,
Yet you send me two bright pearls still.
I hang them within my red silk vest,
So grateful I’m for your good will.
You see my house o’er looks the garden and
My husband guards the palace,halberd in hand.
I know your heart as noble as the sun in the skies,
But I have sworn to serve my husband all my life.
With your twin pearls I send back two tears from my eyes.
Why did we not meet before I was made a wife?
