Shadows of Flowers

Su Shi

Shadows on shadows cover the terrace of jade;

I tell the boy now and then to sweep them away.

At sunset I’ve just seen the flowers’ shadows fade;

They reappear when the rising moon sheds its ray.

The poem “Shadows of Flowers” is one of the seven poems written by Su Shi in rhyme. It is an aria poem, in which the poet expresses his feelings of wanting to do something but being helpless by chanting the shadow of flowers.
