Telling Innermost Feeling

Zhang Xian

Before flowers, beneath the moon, shortly we met

Only to part with bitter regret.

What’s more, I wake from wine and dreams

To find fallen flowers and dim moonbeams.

Flowers will bloom again;

The moon will wax and wane.

Would our hearts be the same?

I’d turn the flame

Of my heart, string on string,

Into willow twigs to retain

The breeze of spring.

注释:

The poet describes the outer world to show his inner world.

The lyric “Telling Innermost Feeling” is a song by Zhang Xian, a lyricist of the Northern Song Dynasty. The whole lyric shifts from the pathos and sorrow in the first piece to the beautiful expectation in the second piece, with sublimation of the heart, extraordinary writing power, ups and downs, and touching to the core. It expresses the beautiful love that does not yield to the evil forces, the nobility and holiness of the heart in the unfortunate fate and the deep love of a couple in a miserable life.
