He Zhizhang –

Yuan’s Garden

He Zhizhang

My host unacquainted with me,

I love his woods and springs with glee.

Don’t worry I cannot buy wine;

I have coins in a purse of mine.

He Zhizhang –

The poem “Yuan’s Garden” is a five-line poem written by He Zhizhang, a poet of the Tang Dynasty. The first line of the poem is about the poet’s visit to Yuan’s house, but he does not know the owner of the house; the second line is about the poet’s rash visit and his choice of a place with excellent scenery; the second two lines are about the poet’s advice to the owner not to worry about buying wine for his guests, who have money in their pockets to buy wine. The whole poem is fresh and unpretentious, and has a unique flavor.
