Song of the Cold Endured
Cao Cao
Northward we go up mountains stiff.
How hard it is to climb the cliff!
The footpath twists like gut of sheep;
The cartwheels break against crags steep.
The trembling trees are stark and bleak;
The northern wind moans on the peak.
Before us crouch bears brown and black;
Tigers and pards howl by the track.
In these vales few people have passed,
And snow is falling thick and fast.
I stretch my neck with long, long sigh;
The hard campaign to grief gives rise.
Why has grief in my heart increased?
All I want is to go back east.
There is no bridge on water deep;
We know not how o’er it to sweep.
And halfway up, we go astray;
At dusk we find nowhere to stay.
Each day go farther off our forces;
Our men are hungry as their horses.
Pack on shoulder, we snatch firewood
And chop ice to boil as our food.
Of Eastern Hills the soldiers’ song[1]
Saddens my heart and soul for long.
