这首诗的具体创作时间不详。相传诗人贾岛在韩愈的劝说下，参加了科举考试，他天真地以为，凭着自己的才学一定能考中，所以，并不把“八百举子”放在眼里，一入考场，挥笔就写，在《病蝉》诗中，痛骂：“什么黄雀、乌鸦，都一样想害蝉。”结果被认为是“无才之人，不得采用”，与平曾等人一起落了个“考场十恶”的坏名。贾岛心知是“吟病蝉之句”得罪了有权势的人，可又无可奈何。便创作了这首自喻诗。
Creation background
The exact date of the poem’s creation is unknown. It is said that the poet Jia Dao, persuaded by Han Yu, took part in the imperial examination. He naively believed that he could pass the examination with his talent. Therefore, he did not pay attention to the “eight hundred examinations”. He wrote as soon as he entered the examination room. In the poem Sick Cicada, he scolded: “What yellow finches and crows want to harm cicadas the same.” As a result, they were considered as “no talent, no use”, and they got a bad name of “ten evils in examination room” together with Ping Zeng and others. Jia Dao knew that he had offended the powerful people by “singing the words of a sick cicada”, but he had no choice. He created this self metaphor poem.
