The Cicada

Luo Binwang

Of autumn the cicada sings;

In prison I’m worn out with care.

How can I bear its blue black wings

Which remind me of my grey hair?

Heavy with dew it cannot fly;

Drowned in the wind, its song’s not heard

Who would believe its spirit high?

Could I express my grief in word?

Hearing in prison the cicada sing, the poet compares himself to a cicada which cannot fly and whose song cannot be heard.

The poem “The Cicada” is a poem written by Luo Binwang, a poet of the Tang Dynasty. The poem was written in the midst of a difficult time. The author sings about the noble character of the cicada, uses the cicada as a metaphor, uses the cicada as an allegory for himself, expresses his love for the object, and sends a deep message to the cicada, expressing the poet’s sorrow for his noble character but “being binded by the time”, and expresses his desire to identify the innocent and clear the injustice. The poem is full of emotion, with clear analogies, natural allusions, and double meaning.
