Tune: Buddhist Dancers

Wei Zhuang

All men will say the Southern land is fair,

A wanderer is willing to spend his whole life there,

He’d like to see spring water bluer than the sky

And, listening to rain, in painted ship to lie.

The wine-shop waitress looks like the moon bright,

Like snow or frost congealed her arms are white.

Till he grows old, from South lands he won’t part,

To leave this land for home would break his heart.

Wei Zhuang (836—910) was considered one of the leaders of the “School among Flowers”. In contrast to the ornate rhetoric of other lyric poets of this School, his diction is simple and direct and explicit. In this lyric is revealed a Northerner’s love for the beautiful Southern land.

“Tune: Buddhist Dancers” is a small order composed by Wei Zhuang, a lyricist of the Tang Dynasty. This lyric describes the beauty of people and life in Jiangnan water town, and expresses the poet’s attachment to Jiangnan water town, as well as the poet’s sadness of wandering and difficulty in returning. In the layout, the first two lines and the last two lines of the upper piece express emotions, and the middle four lines write about scenery and people. The whole lyric is purely written in white, which is fresh, bright and real; the beginning and end of the four lines are straightforward but subtle and rhyming.
