(II)

The rustling eastern wind came with a drizzle light,

And thunder faintly rolled beyond the lotus pool.

When doors were locked and incense burned,I came at night,

And went at dawn when windlass pulled up water cool.

You peeped at me first from behind a curtained bower;

I’m left at last but with the pillow of a dame.

Let my desire not bloom and vie with vernal flower!

For inch by inch my heart is consumed by the flame

Note:The poet describes a rendezvous of two lovers. The wind and rain are symbols of love making. It was said that during the rendezvous of the Southern King(楚襄王)and the Goddess of Mount Witch(巫山神女),the Goddess would bring fresh shower for the thirsting flower, which becomes the symbol of love-making.The faintly rolling thunder may allude to the rolling royal carriage and the lotus pond to the rendezvous. The lover comes at night and leaves at dawn.Line 5 describes their first meeting as love at first sight and line 6 their parting as that of Prince of literary fame(曹植)and the Goddess of River Luo(洛水女神)who left him only a pillow. This shows that a good beginning may not end well,so it might be better not to inflame the desire.
