Li Shangyin’s Poetry – –

Listen to this article
Li Shangyin 李商隱 Lǐ Shāngyǐn (812-858) is the love poet par excellence in the Chinese tradition. His poems, particularly his ‘Untitled Poems’, set a trend for later Chinese love poetry.

To the Poet Drowned in the Southern Lake

The waves of the Southern Lake roll with bitter tears,

Your enchanted soul goes with the waves far away.

The ape on maple tree wails and then disappears.

The mountain fairy in ivy leaves would show you the way.

Your putrid body could not come to life again.

How could your soul get rid of the fishes’stinking smell?

But so long as your younger Southerners remain,

Their long long rope would bind the long long serpent fell.

Note:The poet,a loyal minister banished by the king of Chu(楚王)drowned himself in the Southern Lake 2000 years ago.
