Geographical environment

Position

Chongqing is located in southwestern China and the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. It straddles the transition zone between the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the plains of the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River between 105°11’~110°11′ east longitude and 28°10’~32°13′ north latitude. Terrain

The highest peak in the city is Yintiaoling, the main peak of Jieliang Mountain on the eastern edge of Wuxi County, with an elevation of 2796.8 meters; the lowest in the water surface of the Yangtze River in Wushan County, with an elevation of 73.1 meters. The elevation difference of Chongqing is 2723.7 meters. The mountains are high and deep, ravines are vertical and horizontal, with mountain areas accounting for 76%, hills accounting for 22%, and river valley flat dams accounting for only 2%. Among them, the area under 500 meters above sea level is 31,800 square kilometers, accounting for 38.61% of the total area; 20,900 square kilometers at altitudes of 500 to 800 meters, accounting for 25.41% of the total area; 16,800 square kilometers at altitudes of 800 to 1,200 meters, Accounting for 20.42% of the area; 12,800 square kilometers above 1,200 meters above sea level, accounting for 15.56% of the area.
Chongqing’s terrain descends gradually from north to south to the Yangtze River valley. The northwest and central area are dominated by hills and low mountains, and the southeast is surrounded by two large mountains, Daba Mountain and Wuling Mountain. There are many slopes and it is called a “mountain city”. The total terrain is high in the southeast and northeast, low in the middle and west, and gradually decreases from north to south to the Yangtze River valley.

Climate

Chongqing belongs to a subtropical monsoon humid climate, with an average annual temperature of 16~18℃, the Yangtze River Valley’s Banan, Qijiang, Yunyang and other places are above 18.5℃, Qianjiang, Youyang and other places in the southeast are 14~16℃, and the northeast is above sea level. The higher city entrance is only 13.7℃, the average temperature of the hottest month is 26~29℃, and the average temperature of the coldest month is 4~8℃. The four seasons can be clearly distinguished by the weather temperature method. The average annual precipitation is relatively abundant. Most areas are between 1000 and 1350 mm. The precipitation is mostly concentrated in May to September, accounting for about 70% of the total annual precipitation. The night rains are especially severe at the turn of spring and summer.

Yunwu Mountain in Bishan District has as many as 204 foggy days throughout the year, which can be called the “most in the world”.

Hydrology

The main rivers in Chongqing are the Yangtze River, Jialing River, Wujiang River, Fujian River, Qijiang River, Daning River, Apeng River, Youshui River, etc. The mainstream of the Yangtze River traverses the entire territory from west to east, with a flow of 665 kilometers, traversing the three Wushan anticlines, forming the famous Qutang Gorge, Wu Gorge and Xiling Gorge in Hubei, the world-famous Three Gorges of the Yangtze River; Jialing River comes from the northwest. , 30% off into the Yangtze River in Yuzhong District, Wujiang River into the Yangtze River in Fuling District, there are Libi Gorge, Wentang Gorge, Guanyin Gorge, namely the Jialing River Small Three Gorges.

There are more than 6,000 types of plants in Chongqing, among which are the rare species of Alsophila spinulosa, Metasequoia glyptostroboides, Taiwan fir, silver fir and Davidia involucrata, which are called “living fossils” of plants, with a forest coverage rate of 20.49%. Jinyun Mountain, known as “Bayu Emei” alone, has more than 1,700 subtropical trees and preserves the “living fossil” Metasequoias 160 million years ago, Bole trees, moth trees and other rare and rare plants in the world. Chongqing is one of China’s important producing areas of Chinese medicinal materials. The wild and artificially cultivated Chinese medicinal materials grown in large areas of mountainous areas include Coptis, Atractylodes, Honeysuckle, Codonopsis, Fritillaria, Gastrodia, Magnolia Officinalis, Yellow Tallow, Eucommia, Yuanhu, Angelica, etc. Shizhu Tujia Autonomous County has the largest output of Coptis Chinensis in the country and is the famous “Hometown of Coptis Chinensis”.
There are more than 600 species of various animal resources in Chongqing, including nearly 100 national key rare protected animals such as golden monkeys, South China tigers, lips, and black storks.

Chongqing is the only municipality directly under the Central Government with the Nationality Autonomous Area under its jurisdiction. Education

Before the 28th year of the Republic of China (1937), Chongqing was dominated by secondary education, with 20 ordinary middle schools, 9 normal and vocational schools, plus ordinary middle schools, normal and vocational schools in Ba County (most of Banan District) 8 There are 37 in total.
