Shanghai 1943

The yellowed Spring Festival couplets are still left on the wall,
And a few words are faintly visible: “peace every year”.
On the rice barrel in my hometown which I haven’t gone back to yet,
Grandpa wrote a word “full” in regular script1.

Pothos had grown over the carved doors and windows.
Sunset slanting on the mottled brick wall.
The house with beech wood floors is still filled with,
The smell of the chili bean paste2 made by grandma in those years.

Looking at the black-and-white photos, I began to imagine what my dad and mom looked like in that year.
The lady who spoke Suzhou soft dialect3 walked slowly across the Bund4.

The old time passed, 1943, time became so slow on the way to memories.
Old neighbourhoods and Old alleys belonged to the faint sadness of that era’s white walls and black tiles.
The old time passed, 1943, there was some wind and frost in the past that I look back on.
In the old CD, in the old suitcase, in the iron box full of postcards, there was a rose petal hidden.
