Tune: Dried Lotus Leaves

Liu Bingzhong

(I)

Lotus leaves dried

In color turned from green to grey,

Old stems in the wind sway.

With fragrance lost, they are in yellow dyed.

Last night frost chilled their dream.

They look now lonely on the autumn stream.

(II)

Dried lotus leaves

Whose color grieves,

Can’t bear the bite of hoary frost.

On autumn waves they’re lost

With their stems broken.

The palace maids awoken

Sing songs of lotus gathered on the stream,

Whose prime is passed in dream.

(III)

Southern Peak high,

Northern Peak high,

The Cave of Rainbow Clouds utter a dreary sigh.

The Song Emperor High

In vain has now gone by.

On Southern Hills the wine shop streamers fly

Still as of yore,

But the thriving days of Song are no more.
