In Early Winter the Cold Air Comes Forth

Anonymous

In early winter the cold air comes forth.

How sharp is the biting wind from the north!

Sorrowful, I know how long is the night;

Looking up, I count the stars teeming bright.

On the fifteenth day full waxes the moon;

But on the twentieth it will wane so soon.

A traveler coming from far away

Gives me a letter which begins to say

My far-off husband longs for his dear wife,

And ends by an adieu as long as life.

I put this letter in my inner vest;

For three years no word has dimmed in my breast.

I cherish with whole heart each word, each dot,

But I’m afraid my husband knows it not.
