Mume and Snow (I)

Lu Meipo

The mume blossoms and snow vie in announcing spring;

A poet knows not in whose praises he should sing.

The mume blossoms are not so white as winter snow;

In fragrance snow can’t match mume blossoms when they blow.

Mume and Snow (II)

Lu Meipo

We cannot know mume blossom’s cold-proof without snow;

Nor can a poet without verse his feeling show.

Only when snow falls at sunset and a verse is made,

Before mume blossoms can we say spring’s fully displayed.

“Mume and Snow” is a group of seven lines composed by the poet Lu Meipo (disputed) in the Southern Song Dynasty. These two poems illustrate the relationship between plum, snow and poetry, which are indispensable and combined together to make up beautiful spring colors. The first two lines of the first poem write about plum and snow competing for spring and asking the poet to judge them, and the last two lines are the poet’s comments on plum and snow. The first line of the second poem writes about the relationship between plum and snow, and the second line writes about the relationship between snow and poetry. The last two lines write about the relationship between plum, snow and poetry. The plum blossoms are open while it has not yet snowed, so it still lacks poetry. The two poems are written in a wonderful and rhythmic way.
