Riverside Town
· A Dream on the Night of the Twentieth Day of the First Moon 1075

Su Shi

For the long years the living of the dead knows nought,
Though to my mind not brought,
Could the dead be forgot?
Her lonely grave is far, a thousand miles away.
To whom can I my grief convey?
Revived even if she be, could she still know me?
My face is worn with care,
And frosted is my hair.
Last night I dreamed of coming to my native place;
She was making up her face
Before her mirror with grace.
Each saw the other hushed,
But from our eyes tears gushed.
Can I not be heart-broken when I am awoken
From her grave clad with pines,
Where only the moon shines!

注释:
The poet writes this pathetic elegy on his deceased wife who died ten years ago.

“Riverside Town · A Dream on the Night of the Twentieth Day of the First Moon 1075” is a poem written by Su Shi, a writer of the Song Dynasty, to mourn the death of his wife, Wang Fu, expressing his endless sorrow and longing. It is a lyric that expresses endless sorrow and longing. The first section is about the lyricist’s deep longing for his deceased wife, which is realistic; the second section is about a dream, which expresses the lyricist’s persistent and unrequited love for his deceased wife, which is imaginary. The combination of reality in the first section and dreams in the second section sets off the longing for his deceased wife and deepens the sad tone of the whole lyric. The whole lyric uses the technique of white descriptions, and the words are like the words of a family, but every word comes out from the heart, natural and profound, with true simplicity in the blandness, euphemism and realm, making it a popular masterpiece.
