River Journey from the West to the Capital

Xie Tiao

The Great River flows night and day;

The voyager grieves all the way.

Coming near Purple Mountains strong,

I know the return journey long.

The Milky Way fades in twilight,

Cold riverside still drowned in night.

I crane my neck for capital,

But only see the palace wall.

In golden beams the temple steeps;

O’er royal hall the Jade String peeps.

I drive to the gate of the town,

Missing the tomb of Southern crown.

The sun can’t revive ancient graces;

Now east and west, we’re in two places.

Wind and cloud can’t bar the bird’s dream,

But I’ve no bridge to cross the stream.

I fear attacks of birds of prey;

Chrysanthemums in frost can’t stay.

But now the hunters I defy:

I’m flying high in boundless sky.
