Far in the past, that day we left home;
we’ve outgrown the gibes of fellow recruits.
Not that loved ones are forgotten, our flesh and blood,
but a man never knows when he must die.
We race our horses, slipping the bit from their mouths,
green reins slack in our hands;
galloping down ten-thousand-yard slopes,
hunched in the saddle, we practice how to seize the enemy flags.
