English #1 – Kua Fu: The Sun Chaser

Without form, and void,
The earth was chaotic.
And there was light,
Then time was created.

In the dimmed North, where direction was indiscernible,
There born was he, the giant one, ah…

Two yellow snakes winding on his arms,
Two yellow snakes hanging on his ears,
Accompanying the solitary one…
Whose bosom was the undulate mountains,
Whose wand was the swaying trees…

Out from his ice-cold home,
With the wand clearing away the clouds,
Sweeping away the desolation in heart,
Attracted by the distant light…
So determined was he,
To chase the sun.

One step across a river,
One somersault across a peak;
In an instant, the sky shook and earth cracked;
All creatures were panicked.
But still was he marching forth, dauntlessly,
No flinch, no returning…

Exhausted and suffering from thirst,
He drunk the Huanghe River up;
And then he dried out the Weihe River.
But this thirst could not be quelled.
So Kua Fu the giant fell,
And has been asleep for millennia…

His body turned into ashes,
His blood ran into brooks.
His wand budded, grew into a peach tree,
Forming a peach forest so red.
How red the trees were,
Reflecting the sunset…
