For the Drunken Calligrapher

Gao Shi

People may make friends with the throng;

This sage sings a different song.

In verve he’ll write as floating cloud;

When drank as mad, he would talk loud.

Though white-haired, he loves to be free.

From royal favor could he flee?

With a pot of wine by his bed,

How long can he still rest his head?
