Song of the Bright Lady

Shi Chong[1]

I am a daughter of the Han,

But wedded to the Tartar Khan.

I’d hardly finished my goodbye

When forerunners held banners high.

The servants wept to leave their home;

Carriage steeds neighed with mouth in foam.

With sorrow my heart broke and bled;

Tears fell and wet my ribbons red.

We went far and farther away

And reached the Tartar town one day.

Ushered into the Dome of fame,

I was called Queen Yanzhi by name.

In foreign tribe I’m ill at ease;

The high position does not please.

Wed first to father, then to son,

Surprise and shame would not be done.

To be or not to be in strife,

Silent, I lead ignoble life.

Ignoble life without relief,

My heart is filled with wrath and grief.

I’d ride on the wings of wild geese

To fly far away where I please.

But the wild geese don’t care for me

I stand long in anxiety.

I was a jade people admire;

I’m now a flower in the mire.

The flower falls at dusk, alas!

I’d be withered with autumn grass.

To my posterity I’d say:

Hard fate to be wed far away!

注释:

[1] The richest man of the Jin Dynasty, who wrote in the first person about the lady wed to the Tartar Khan in 33 BC.
