Li Shangyin’s Poetry – –

Listen to this article
Li Shangyin (813–858) was a poet from the late-Tang era famous for his dense and cryptic poetic imagery.

Written at a Family Feast on the 29th Day of the 7th Moon

The poolside dew congealed into frost before the door.

The wind sweeps by and the bamboo shivers all the more.

It’s nothing strange for people to meet and to part.

Why should the lotus blooms waver and grieve my heart?

Only my lamplight sees the homesickness of mine,

My dreary life can’t be consoled by a cup of wine.

Shall I remain so until all my hair grows white?

A mountain rich in pines and snow would be my site.
