Li Shangyin’s Poetry – –

The Second Day of the Second Moon

On second day of second moon I sail on stream.

The vernal wind brings warmth and I hear flutist sing.

Red flowers have no heart and green willows no dream,

But purple butterflies and golden bees love spring.

How can I live from my homeland so far apart?

In willow camp I’ve done my duty for three years.

The rippling stream can’t understand a roamer’s heart;

The night rain dripping from old roof assails my ears.

Note:This poem contrasts the beauty of spring with the homesickness of the poet.
