Shang Yang (around 395BC – 338 BC), also known as Wei Yang and Gongsun Yang, was of the Han nationality , and was an important statesman, thinker and legal thinker of the Warring States Period of Chinese history. Born in the State of Wei (now Huangliangzhuang town, Anyang city, Henan province) and with the support of Duke Xiao of Qin, Yang enacted numerous reforms while creating a militarily powerful and strongly centralized kingdom. Deeply despised by the Qin nobility and distrusted by King Huiwen, Yang was said to have been executed by being fastened to five chariots and torn to pieces following the death of Duke Xiao of Qin. His changes to the State’s legal system, known as the Shang Yang Reforms, propelled the Qin to prosperity during his 20 plus years in power.
