Six Recollections

Shen Yue

(Ⅰ) She Came in Beauty

I think of when she came

Up marble steps like bright, bright flame.

Talking long, long of when we parted,

Of sad, sad yearning, broken-hearted,

We were ne’er tired to gaze our fill;

Our hunger often came to nil.

(Ⅱ) She Sat in Beauty

I think how she was seen

Sitting before the dotted screen.

Now four or five songs she would sing;

Now twice or thrice she’d pluck her string.

Smiling, she was beyond compare;

When vexed, more lovable than e’er.

(III) She Ate in Beauty

I think of how she ate:

Her face changed color o’er the plate

She felt too shy to take her seat,

Too bashful to begin to eat.

As if not hungry, she’d not dine,

Too weak to hold her cup of wine.

(IV) She Slept in Beauty

I think of her in bed:

Sleepy, she lowered not her head.

Till coaxed, she’d not undress her gown,

Nor put on pillow her head down.

Ashamed to be seen by her mate,

In candlelight she’d blush and wit.
