Li Shangyin’s Poetry – –

Listen to this article
Li Shangyin (813–858) was a poet from the late-Tang era famous for his dense and cryptic poetic imagery.

To the Moon Goddess

Upon the marble screen the candlelight is winking;

The Silver River slants and morning stars are sinking.

You’d regret to have stolen the miraculous potion;

Each night you brood over the lonely celestial ocean.

Note:The Moon Goddess was said to have been the wife of the miraculous Archer who had shot down nine suns from the sky and was awarded with the elixir,but his wife stole it,ate it,flew to the moon and became the solitary Moon Goddess.The poet writes this verse to show himself as solitary as the Moon Goddess brooding over the lonely sky.
