93从那以后,缘根天天变着法子折磨虚竹,虚竹还当是自己犯了佛家戒律,本该重罚。于是他每天浇莱、劈柴,还要受到缘根的鞭打,不几天,虚竹全身已是伤痕累累。

94一天,虚竹正在劈柴,缘根走近身来,一反常态,对他极其尊敬恭维,还替他打开了镣铐。缘根还跪倒在虚竹面前,打自己耳光,请求虚竹原谅他先前对他的不恭和虐待。
One day, when Xu Zhu was chopping firewood, Yuan Gen came close to him. He was very respectful and complimented, and he also opened the shackles for him. Yuan Gen also knelt down in front of Xu Zhu, slapped himself in the face and asked him to forgive his previous disrespect and abuse.
95虚竹感到奇怪,弄不明白究竟发生了什么事。等他顺着缘根往廊下望去,只见那里坐着四名僧人,一色灰布值袍,灰布僧帽,脸孔朝里,看不清相貌。虚竹猜想一定是这四位僧人,使了什么法子让缘根这样怕他。
Xu Zhu felt strange and couldn’t understand what had happened. When he looked down the corridor along the edge of the root, he saw four monks sitting there. They were dressed in gray cloth, with grey cloth hats and faces facing inward. Xu Zhu guessed that these four monks must have done something to make Yuan Gen so afraid of him.
96连续三天,缘根都尽心尽意服侍虚竹,这更令虚竹大惑不解。到了第三天,忽听到寺内钟声大鸣,虚竹赶紧随同菜园中十多名僧人一起赶到大雄宝殿。

97这时殿上已聚集了一千多僧众,人数虽多,却鸦雀无声。这时,就见寺中方丈玄慈和玄字辈的三位高僧,陪着七位僧人,从后殿缓步而出。
At this time, more than 1000 monks had gathered in the hall. Although the number was large, it was silent. At this time, we saw the abbot Xuanci and three eminent monks of Xuanzi generation in the temple, accompanied by seven monks, walking slowly out of the back hall.
