22傍晚时分，韦小宝催马回到北京城，即去叩见皇帝。康熙以为韦小宝被鳌拜的党徒掳走，正在着急，一见韦小宝走进书房，又惊文喜:“小桂子，你……你怎么逃了出来?”

23韦小宝早已想好了一大套谎话，就把自己如何被掳，如何逃脱，说得绘声绘色。韦小宝道:“奴才逃出来时，记明了路径，咱们马上带兵去捉鳌拜的奸党，好不好?”

24康眾即命韦小宝和索额图领兵去捉人。到得天地会聚会之所，自然早已不见人影，但在菜园中掘出了鳌拜的尸首，还找到了陈近南他们故意留下的吊唁鳌拜的灵牌和挽联。韦小宝脸上不动声色，肚中暗暗好笑。
Kang Zhong immediately ordered Wei Xiaobao and Suoetu to lead the troops to catch people. 25过了三天，韦小宝以访查鳌拜余党为由，出宫来到东城甜水井胡同。进了大厅，见陈近南已坐在厅上，立即上前磕头。
